Setting:

Stephanie's world outwardly resembles modern day earth. As the series progresses, the author Janet steadily updates the technology in each book (moving from tape decks in cars to CD players - not that Stephanie is able to maintain a steady car - they have a tendency to have unfortunate things happen to them), home portable phones to cell phones, and the slow removal of beepers. The first book was written in the mid 90s, and the tech shows. However, Stephanie herself doesn't ever seem to age, though the tech evolves around her. Janet takes a lot of literary silence with this, mainly to keep the books up to date. By book 9, Eminem is mentioned, and we can pretty much consider the books to be completely modern. I'd like to keep her in the 'modern' world for ease and continuity.

That said, Stephanie has a wide range of knowledge from older technology to modern tech (the series is still ongoing). It's pretty on par with the way the 90s and 2000s evolved, and there's no aliens or supernatural beings skittering about that she is yet aware of, though there is a spin off series involving one of her love interests, Diesel, that does involve the supernatural (Wicked Business, Wicked Appetite). As of the third book, she still appears unaware of this little factoid.

Her home town is Trenton New Jersey in a small little section called the 'Burg'. It’s small but pretty comfortable chunk of Trenton that could easily be mistaken for a black and white 1950s sitcom suburb - there's big hair, red lipstick, lots of home cooked meals, and gossip. It's the kind of place where the entertainment is finding out that latest juicy tidbit, and going to any of the local funeral parlors for the evenings viewing. Viewings are one of the places to be in Trenton, and are considered to be a very social affair despite the...morbidity of it.

It's a small town atmosphere and most women stay home and play housewife, and everyone is welcome in your home – sometimes even if you don’t really like them. It’s a cozy and safe place, and the gossip is thick. If there’s ever anything going on – with anyone - you can make a few phone calls and you’ll have the entire story, plus far more than you ever asked for. Visitors from out of town or state are treated cautiously but with hospitality and respect – unless they do or have done something to cause questions against their integrity or motives. Most businesses have been there for years; and you’re expected to find a husband, settle down, and get married and have a couple kids. The tradition of home cooked meals and family is high in the Burg, and while some do leave and move on, most remain and are happy with their little slice of life.

Trenton isn’t so special that it doesn’t have a dark side, however. Just like any other place, it has plenty of criminals jumping bail and avoiding court dates and jail time – and that’s where Stephanie comes in. Her job is that of a bounty hunter, though she prefers the term ‘Fugitive Apprehension Agent’ instead of associating herself with all of the implications/assumptions that are associated with the term ‘bounty hunter’. However, that’s exactly what she is. Driven to blackmail her cousin Vinny for a job out of sheer desperation, Stephanie now packs a 38 special (that she hates), handcuffs (that she always forgets to use), and defense spray and hits the streets of Trenton to apprehend criminals that have failed to appear in court and skipped bail. This mostly entails a lot of getting shot at, making enemies (sometimes very dangerous ones) and making a quick buck when she’s low on rent money. It’s a very dangerous job, and she’s often told that she needs to get something more stable and safe, but she never listens.

The job itself is bounty hunting, but if you're thinking 'Dog the Bounty Hunter', your'e dead wrong. Janet Evanovich's brand of bounty hunting is a little more comical than most, and the side apprehensions are generally there for entertainment rather than to pose an actual threat. Stephanie generally has one big case per novel, and the others are generally filler that the author uses for comedic purposes.

Also, Grandma Mazur is the only one who really approves of her job, and consistently asks Stephanie if she's shot anyone lately.

Personality:

Stephanie Plum is a melting pot of personality traits that have a person sympathizing with her one moment, then subsequently wanting to shake her silly the next. She's got a good amount of common sense but seems to have very little street smarts. She appears to think that her job of bounty hunting is a great way for fast cash - and it would be a lot better suited for her if she actually knew what she was doing.

She's pretty naïve in a lot of ways and thinks that walking up to an FTA (Failure to Appear) and simply asking them to come along with her back to the police station to 'reschedule' a court date is a good way to do things, despite her friends Ranger and Morelli telling her differently. She's stubborn to a fault and refuses to listen to them (and her mother) when they tell her to find another job, and will keep going until she's got her prize, regardless of how badly she bumbles things up along the way. Her stubbornness is what usually gets her job done – she’s like a hound chasing after a bone and doesn’t give up until she’s got what it is she wants.

She's prone to screwing things up - but the good thing is that she at least knows it. In Three to Get Deadly, she says "I make lots of mistakes. I try hard not to make the same mistake more than three or four times," - and she does learn from her mistakes.

This does not, however, always stop her from repeating them.

Stephanie also isn't a kind of person to let a grudge go - if you happen to screw her over, she never forgets. When she was seventeen, Joe Morelli took her virginity on the floor of the bakery where she worked - then never called. A year later she happened to see him standing on a curb, and without thinking twice she ran him down and broke his leg in three places. Despite being a pretty compassionate and caring person (at least, when there isn't any cake on the line), she's damn good at staying pissed off.

Stephanie knows that a lot of the things she does are dumb and is well aware of the consequences – but does it anyway. She has a smart side of her that often appears and while she listens, nods her head and acknowledges it, most of the time she tends to ignore it. She knows that breaking and entering is bad, but she does it frequently - at least once in every book. Her courage tends to run out when she is faced with dark cellars, though on more than one occasion she allows herself to be used as bait - both by Morelli and by Ranger on multiple occasions.

Stephanie’s morals also seem to be a little skewed. She has very few qualms about said breaking and entering, but when on the cusp of getting caught herself by someone else breaking in, she's appalled at the crime in Trenton.

Despite being nauseated by the sight of dead bodies, Stephanie has actually killed a man Jimmy Alpha, and doesn’t seem to harbor a lot of guilt about it. After being cornered in her apartment and told that she was going to be raped and subsequently murdered, Stephanie breaks away, gets shot in the ass, then pumps five rounds into Jimmy’s heart.

…Then promptly passed out.

The only notion she feels guilt about this appears in her question to Morelli: “Could this have gone any differently?” His answer of ‘no’ seems to pacify her, and following mentions of the incident are either side by side with a joke or sarcasm. That sarcasm can probably be identified as a defense mechanism, especially when she’s in a predicament she doesn’t see a lot of hope in. She tends to default to it when she’s in a pickle or doesn’t know what else to say, but often finds herself at a loss for words frequently with Morelli and Ranger.

Speaking of these two men – it’s important to note her passions and emotions in relation to them, because they affect the way she acts around them. She feels strongly for both of them, but at this point in her story one couldn’t call it love, though there’s certainly plenty of lust to go around. Ranger is the dark and brooding forbidden type, while Morelli is a ‘safer’ bet – depending on how one defines the word ‘safe’. She probably wouldn’t call either of them safe, but at least Morelli would marry her.

Eventually. Probably.

***When she gets pulled out of the water, Stephanie will probably at first think she’s dead. At the rate she gets show at and destroys cars, it really isn’t that far fetched. Really, her only regret would be that she didn’t get to have just one more piece of her mother’s spice cake before she bit the dust.

But -- she’s the kind of person that wont really believe what she’s told immediately – especially if it’s pretty far fetched, like this whole in-between worlds and possibly died but maybe not kind of thing. She often catches her friend Lula in her fibs, and will root out the truth if it kills he and in this case, while at first she’ll be incredibly befuddled – especially when she finds that she’s soaking wet – to start quizzing. Once the initial shock is over and she’s all kinds of pissed off, that’s when she’s going to start demanding answers.

Appearance: Stephanie herself states that she’s 5’7”, 125 pounds with blue eyes and shoulder length brown hair. She’s pretty slender because she’s constantly on the move, but I wouldn’t necessarily peg her as ‘toned’. She eats her weight in cake and sweets, and only runs on occasion – either because she’s getting shot at or because she felt like torturing herself in the early morning hours.

Abilities: Other than being a…somewhat capable bounty hunter, Stephanie has no real ‘abilities’ besides being very good at getting cars blown up and selling lingerie.

Inventory: Her 38 special, sneakers, flannel jacket & jeans, sneakers, and purse.

Suite: Water. Despite her claims at wanting to sever the invisible umbilical cord that still ties her to the Burg, Stephanie likes the coziness and homeliness of it. She doesn’t need much in her home, just the essentials. They don’t even need to be nice – just comfy. She’d get along with the calm-minded and easy going feel of the water sector.

In-Character Samples:
Third Person:

There are few things in life that truly baffled Stephanie Plum because by now, she’d seen and done a lot and she’d foolishly thought that at this point, there was nothing that could surprise her. However, there were still a few things on this planet that just didn’t make any sense, and one of those things happened to be the existence of slugs. For the life of her, she couldn’t see any actual purpose in said existence. Admittedly, she may not have paid a lot of attention in biology class so perhaps God had some kind of greater plan that involved slugs – maybe an eventual slug takeover, where they became the dominant species on the planet. Stephanie didn’t really see that happening, though, and continued to harbor an unnatural and unnecessary hatred of the garden pest.

Another thing was the unnatural deliciousness of her mothers spice cake, complete with chocolate frosting.

That’s what she was dreaming about when she’d been fished out of the water by a few odd looking men and as she blinked back to life she groggily protested the interruption of said dream despite the unsettling feeling that there might have been a giant slug overlord looming in the background.

“Five more minutes…” Stephanie grumped, but the fact that she was outside was what really pulled her from her slumber.

That, and giant slugs.

It only took a moment before Stephanie was sitting bolt upright, swaying a little with both the rock of the cart she was in and the nausea that threatened to overwhelm her. Where the hell was she? This didn’t look anything like Trenton, and it damn sure didn’t look a thing like Jersey, period.

Jesus Christ, someone had kidnapped her.

“You know, when you’re kidnapping someone, it’s polite to tell them where they are.” Or maybe it wasn’t, Stephanie wasn’t sure – she wasn’t exactly and experienced kidnappee and didn’t plan on becoming one, though she had the sneaking suspicion it might be one of those clauses on the job requirement statement that people tend to overlooked when they’re skimming a wordy document.

The answer she got didn’t make any sense and the word ‘Tu Vishan’ sounded alien and foreign. This made her temporarily forget about documents and job requirements in lieu of staring at one of the…whatever they were.

“Am…I dead?” She asked cautiously, not certain if she truly wanted to know the answer. The answer she got was alarming, but not quite cause for panic just yet. She needed to know more.

A lot more.

Network:

[Stephanie comes onto the network a la video and she looks tired, bedraggled, and kind of like hell in her flannel shirt and still damp jeans.]

Hi. Stephanie here. [She wrings her hair a little.]

That was an experience I never, ever want to repeat.  [Ever.]

Why the ocean? Couldn’t it have been a freshwater lake? At least that way, I wouldn’t feel like a too salty piece of beef jerky, though I guess then you run the risk of leeches and other watery vermin. [She needed a shower, bad, but she had some questions first. It wasn’t unordinary for her to shunt personal hygiene to the side for at least a few minutes when there were answers that could be sniffed out.]

And, why a coma? Anybody have any answers? Those guys that ‘saved’ me were kind of vague. I’ll buy coffee – if they have it here and God I hope they do – for anyone that can help me out.

[Or at least, she will until her money runs out, anyway.]
